The Sea Beast joins Netflix's collection of stellar family-friendly animated adventures. A young girl named Maisie (Zaris-Angel Hator) stows away on the ship of sea monster hunter Captain Crow , becoming wrapped up in a thrilling journey through uncharted waters. Bringing originality to the high seas and swashbuckling characters, The Sea Beast is a must-watch chapter of enchanting fantasy. Hulu waited until after Halloween to fill the library with horror movies, but it was well worth the wait. The onslaught of horror is headlined by George C. Romero’s 1968 classic. When corpses begin to come back to life and leave the graveyard in search of fresh human meat, the pragmatic Ben leads a group to barricade themselves in an old farmhouse.

In my opinion, that drought should have ended with Maya Erskine this year, whose work in the charming and whip-smart Plus One was definitely an overlooked performance of 2019 opposite the endlessly reliably Jack Quaid. This movie does a lot right, but Erskine's presence is its masterstroke, and worth watching for this alone. Paul Feig redeems his reputation as a less-than-ambitious comedy director with perhaps the greatest Lifetime Movie homage ever committed to screen. Blake Lively does the best work of her career in this delightfully complex mystery thriller with a dark, dark sense of humor. Now 11 years old, Moon still holds up as one of the great modern sci-fi stories.

Nobody really asked foranother adaptation ofPinocchio, but if anybody was to do it, Guillermo del Toro is certainly an interesting choice. Reality and cinematic artifice begin to bleed into one another during their time on the island, and both characters are changed by their experiences—a moving reflection of the way movies can change us, too . The Pain of Others is an eerie, unsettling documentary that keeps shifting beneath your feet. Rather than being a point-and-gawk movie, The Pain of Others challenges viewers to consider how they perceive the subjects and why they’re watching them in the first place.

It’s an unusual, thought-provoking film for skeptics and believers alike. They talk about their hopes and fears for their future and their children’s futures. Social commentary rings throughout this dystopian thriller, which takes shocking, occasionally gruesome turns all the way to the bottom. If you were mesmerized by The Haunting of Hill House, then Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King novel Gerald's Game is a must-watch. A couple goes on holiday at an isolated lake house, where one thing leads to another...

This one, in the space of an hour, takes the audience on a whole existential journey, the tale of a man called Bill for whom life seems to suddenly start imploding, his mind spinning off into a million different directions. Yet it’s not a film without hope; there’s some comfort in staring into the void. Which makes it perfect, and strangely soothing, at-home isolation watching. The Cannes-winning Japanese masterpiece found a healthy audience in the U.S. but, hey, it could always be healthier. Adam McKay might next be tackling Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-nominated masterpiece Parasite for HBO, but Step Brothers will always be McKay's own special kind of masterpiece. Will Ferrell gives his best off-the-wall comedy performance of the 2000s. (Just kidding, don't.) It's weird to think Jenny Slate was once, to many, "that actor who swore on SNL in 2009" and now is one of our most treasured comedians.

A big part of that is Obvious Child, which carries some weighty themes but never once veers into melodrama, or away from a deeply smart, wonderfully funny movie. Jafar Panahi’s ironically titled 2012 documentary This Is Not a Film would be notable if only for the fact that it was smuggled out of Iran in a cake — while Panahi was under house arrest there — so that it could premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Panahi, who had been charged by Iran with making propaganda against the government and banned from making movies, has been restricted from moving freely for much of the 2010s.
